Decoding Your Baby's Needs in the Summer Heatwave

The summer sun can be delightful for us, but for our precious newborns, the intense heat can be a source of discomfort and frustration. This is especially true for new moms who have recently given birth this scorching summer in India. IMD has issued a heat wave warning for many regions in India with cities like Mumbai facing scorching temperatures of 40 degree celsius.

Newborn babies are still developing their ability to regulate body temperature, making them extra sensitive to the heat. This can lead to increased crying, leaving parents feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to soothe their little ones.

Here at House of Zelena, we understand the challenges new moms face. That's why we've spoke with lactation consultant Aastha Grover to help you decipher your newborn's cries and navigate the summer heatwave with confidence.

Understanding Newborn Cries: A Universal Language

Newborn babies cry as their primary way of communicating their needs and discomforts. While it may seem like a constant chorus at times, there are actually many reasons behind those cries. Let's explore some common culprits:

  •  Hungry for Comfort:  Sometimes, babies cry simply because they need the comfort and security of being held close. Aastha emphasizes, "The first step to manage a newborn cry is always to hold and cuddle the baby. Soothing the baby first before anything often works wonders!"
  •  Feeling the Heat:  Remember, your newborn can't express feeling hot verbally. Crying could be their way of saying they're uncomfortable in the summer heat. Dress your baby in loose, breathable cotton clothing and keep them in a cool, shaded environment.
  •  Thirsty:  Newborn babies, especially breastfed babies, can get thirsty in the heat. Offer frequent feeds and ensure they are getting enough fluids. Remember that breastmilk is 85% water and is enough to satisfy their thirst. Aastha says “Its a myth that newborns need outside water in the summer. If your baby is exclusively breastfed, they need nothing more than breastmilk.”
  •  Diaper Discomfort:  A wet or dirty diaper can definitely be a cry-worthy situation! Check your baby's diaper regularly and change it promptly. Mothers also worry about the pee count in the summer season. So many mothers in the Zactive mom community complain that babies are peeing less in the summer. Aastha says “Do keep a watch on the pee count in a 24 hr period. Baby needs to pee 7+ times in 24 hrs. If that is going on well, nothing to worry about!”
  •  Gas or Reflux:  These digestive issues can be common in newborns and cause discomfort, leading to crying. Consult your pediatrician if you suspect your baby may have gas or reflux.

Beyond the Basics: Special Care for Newborns in summer

    Swaddling with Caution:

    1. While swaddling can be a great way to soothe newborns, be mindful of overheating in the summer. Use a lightweight swaddle or consider alternative calming techniques if your baby seems hot.
    2. Try fabrics like muslin which are breathable and lightweight.

     Beware of Overstimulation:

    1. The summer heat can make newborns more sensitive to stimuli.
    2.  Dim the lights, minimize loud noises, and prioritize quiet snuggle time to avoid overstimulation.

     Keep a watch on temperature:

    1. As mentioned earlier, newborns are not able to regulate body temperature so it's very critical to keep a watchful eye on the temperature.
    2. Make the baby wear light weight cotton clothes. Be very sure not to overdress the baby and not to put extra blankets on them.
    3.  Keep the windows open and keep the room well ventilated. Keep checking the baby for signs of overheating.
    4. If you feel comfortable, switch on an AC or air cooler for short periods to lower the temperature of the surroundings.
    5. Do not take the baby out in the hot sun from 11 AM to 3 PM.

    Remember, You're Not Alone!

Decoding your newborn's cries can be a learning process, especially during a challenging summer heatwave.  Here are some additional tips from Aastha:

    •  Track Your Baby's Cues:  Over time, you'll start to recognize the different types of cries your baby uses to communicate hunger, discomfort, or tiredness.

    •  Respond with Sensitivity:  Always respond to your baby's cries promptly and with a calming presence. Talk softly, sing lullabies, or gently rock your baby.

    •  Seek Support Network:  Don't hesitate to reach out to your partner, family, or a trusted friend for help. Taking care of yourself will allow you to better care for your baby.

    •  Consult Your Pediatrician:  If your baby's crying seems excessive, or if you have any concerns about their health, always consult with your pediatrician.

This is a good article! I also give baby bath twice a day sometimes and mostly before sleeping in summer it cools baby skin and helps baby have a good sleep. as u mentioned newborn cant regulate body temperature so sometimes they cry due to feeling hot and we dont understand that so dressing baby well and in cotton muslin clothes is very essential
