Shraddha’s Journey Of Naming Her Sons After Lord Krishna

Meet Shraddha Puniyani, a home maker from Mumbai and a mother of 2 sons! She shares her journey about naming her sons which goes back to her childhood! Read along! 

I was one of those girls as a child, the one who played with dolls and dreamed of being married and having kids! I never really played office - office but I always knew I wanted kids! I always had imaginary kids when I played and I would call them by some unique name! I come from a very religious SIndhi business family and most of us have names which have a “religious and spiritual” meaning. My name is Shraddha and I have a younger sister Aastha - both of which mean faith and devotion! So I had started shortlisting names for my future babies as a child!

Fast forward to 2015 when I met the love of my life Shlok! His name is also of the same spiritual significance (Shlok means prayer in Hinduism). We both wanted to become parents within the first year of marriage but life had it otherwise. I lost my father in 2016 and I couldn't get my mind around becoming a mom. I am a huge Krishna devotee and I knew my devotion would bear fruits. I was diagnosed with PCOS in that year itself which again brought a jolt to my dream of becoming a mother. But I had “shraddha” in my God and I kept being positive. I gained weight and faced terrible mood swings thanks to the PCOS but being religious I found peace in chanting and Krishna bhajans. 

2018: My First Son, Krishnay – A Name of Devotion

I was told I would need to resort to assisted reproduction to conceive. I had 1 failed IUI after which I decided to leave this to God's will. But as destiny would have it, I conceived without help in 2018. When my first son was born in 2018, I felt an instant connection to Lord Krishna. His name had to reflect love, wisdom, and divine strength, but I didn’t want a common name. After months of searching and shortlisting , I found a name that felt like an extension of Krishna, yet uniquely his own—Krishnay. I had other names on the list as well like Karnish and Kridansh for boys and Miraya and Kanvi for girls. 

"Krishnay" carries the essence of Krishna’s name but has a distinct sound that makes it special. Every time I call him, I feel as if I am invoking Krishna’s blessings into his life. It’s a name that holds devotion, charm, and power—just like my son.

2024: The Birth of Viaansh, My Second Born

Six years later, miraculously in 2024, I conceived again naturally! When I named my first born Krishnay, I wanted a name that carried the essence of Lord Krishna while being unique. So when my second son was born in 2024, I wanted his name to be just as special - something connected to Krishna and matching with the vibe of Krishnay. 

After much thought I chose the name Viaansh. It took me moths of searching on google, shortlisting names, fights at home with in laws who wanted a say. But my husband was my rock who said I can be the one who decides! 

Meaning of Viaansh: Its a sanskrit inspired name which means "sacred blessing" or "part of Lord Krishna".  If Krishnay carries Krishna's essence, Viaansh is a part of that divine. Together their names represent love, faith and strength - just like Krishna Himself!

In today’s world, where many parents opt for modern, globalized names, I chose to stay connected to my roots. I wanted my children to carry names that would be a constant reminder of their cultural and spiritual heritage. My life has been a struggle and my devotion has seen me through it all! I am still that little girl on the inside who is now a mother to 2 beautiful boys! 

A name is the first gift parents give to their child so I believe that it should be done with enough thought and research. Choosing Krishnay and Viaansh was not just about picking beautiful names—it was about giving my children a legacy of strength, faith, and meaning. Every time I call their names, I feel as if I am invoking blessings, love, and divine protection over them!
