How Mahima, a working mom, went about finding the perfect names for her babies.

How Mahima, a working mom, went about finding the perfect names for her babies.

Meet Mahima Sapru Trakru, a working mom from Delhi/NCR, who juggles life as a mother of two little ones and a playful dog. She opens up about the heartfelt journey and the beautiful story behind choosing the perfect names for her children! Here is her story in her own words!

In the summer of 2021, when I was pregnant with my first child, I had a name picked out long before I even felt those first kicks. It was the perfect name—or so I thought. As a working mom in Delhi NCR, juggling a busy life, I’d always dreamed of naming my baby “Dhimahi.” It wasn’t just a name; it was deeply personal, a blend of my husband’s name and mine.  Dhiraj + Mahima = Dhimahi

You must be wondering about the meaning of this name. Are you feeling like you have heard the word before?

Om Bhur-Bhuvah Svah Tat-Savitur-Varenyam

was inspired by the Gayatri Mantra and other sacred Hindu prayers which have a mention of “Dhimahi”, making it both meaningful and unique.

But my husband wasn’t convinced. He didn’t find it “interesting enough.”, We went back and forth on this for months, right up until my eighth month of pregnancy. I was unwavering, adamant that this was the name. However, the universe seemed to have other plans.

A Year of Tests and Triumphs

My pregnancy journey wasn’t smooth. I contracted dengue towards the end of my first trimester. It was a terrifying time, especially after having experienced a pregnancy loss in 2019. Adding to my fears, my mother-in-law also contracted dengue, and her condition became critical. Her platelet count plummeted to a dangerous 10,000, and she was hospitalized.

I remember lying in bed, scared not just for myself but for my baby, wondering if the universe was testing me again. But somehow, we both pulled through. It took a week for me to recover, and miraculously, my baby remained unaffected. My mother-in-law, too, came out of danger after a harrowing few days.

It was during those moments of fear and gratitude that my husband said something that stayed with me:This baby has protected both of you. You need a name that reflects that.”

Suddenly, “Dhimahi” didn’t feel like enough anymore. I needed a name that carried the weight of what my child had already been—a protector, a beacon of resilience.

The Hunt for the Perfect Name

With just weeks left before my due date, I dove headfirst into the endless world of baby name websites. I scoured meanings, origins, and pronunciations, looking for something unique yet profound. It wasn’t easy. Every time I thought I’d found “the one,” I’d second-guess myself. I wanted a name that not only meant “protector” but also resonated with the spiritual and emotional significance of “Dhimahi.”

Eventually, I found two names that felt just right:

  • Avira for a girl, meaning "brave, strong, or protector," which echoed the same essence as “Dhimahi.”

  • Avitr for a boy, which also meant “the protector.”

Both names had a common thread—“Avi”—giving them a sibling-like connection. The more I thought about it, the more I loved how they sounded together, how they carried the meaning of protection and resilience, and how rare they were.

But settling on them wasn’t easy. I spent weeks going back and forth, checking different websites, looking for alternatives, and making sure these names truly felt right. By the time I gave birth in 2022, I knew in my heart that these were the names.

In April 2022, I welcomed my daughter, Avira, into the world. She was everything I had hoped for—strong, brave, and my little protector. And in 2024, I was blessed again with my son, Avitr.

My kids embody the love, resilience, and hope that carried me through some of the most challenging times of my life. Their names are not just unique—they’re stories, memories, and a reflection of everything I hold dear.

Even now, when I say their names, I’m reminded of the long journey it took to find them. It wasn’t just about picking something beautiful or unique; it was about finding names that carried the weight of our experiences, our faith, and our love as a family. Both my children, in their own way, are my “Dhimahi.”

And so, for every parent out there stressing over finding the “perfect” name—take your time. It’s not just a name you’re choosing; it’s a legacy, a story, and a piece of your heart. After all, a name isn’t just something you give your child—it’s something you give to yourself, too.
